PSA vs BGS vs SGC: Which Grader Is Right for You?
Choosing a grader is one of the most consequential decisions a collector makes — and it's not just about who grades hardest or fastest. PSA, BGS (Beckett Grading Services), and SGC each have distinct markets, label structures, turnaround economics, and community reputations. Here's how they compare.
PSA: The Liquidity Standard
PSA is the dominant grader for trading cards by volume and market liquidity. A PSA 10 is the benchmark that most buyers search for first on eBay, which means PSA-slabbed cards typically have more sold comps and shorter time-to-sale than the same card in any other holder. PSA uses a 10-point integer scale with no half-grades.

BGS: The Precision Grader
Beckett breaks its grade into four subgrades — Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface — giving collectors a much more detailed picture of card condition. BGS uses half-point grades (e.g. 9.5, 8.5) and its top tier, the BGS 10 Pristine with a Black Label, commands significant premiums. A BGS 9.5 is widely considered the equivalent of a PSA 10 on modern cards.
"PSA wins on liquidity. BGS wins on precision. SGC wins on value."
SGC: The Vintage and Value Play
SGC has carved out a strong niche in vintage sports cards with competitive turnaround times and pricing. SGC-graded cards typically sell for less than the PSA equivalent — not because SGC grades worse, but because the market is less liquid. For buyers, this creates opportunity.
SGC 9.5s and 10s sometimes trade at a discount to PSA equivalents. You can crack and resubmit to PSA, or hold as the SGC market matures.
| Grader | Scale | Known For | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSA | 1–10 integer | Highest liquidity, dominant market share | Modern and vintage, all categories |
| BGS | 1–10 + subgrades | Precision, Black Label premium | High-value modern cards |
| SGC | 1–10 with half grades | Fast turnaround, vintage sports niche | Vintage sports, value plays |
Which Should You Submit To?
- PSA — submitting for resale, want maximum liquidity
- BGS — near-mint modern card that could hit a Black Label 10
- SGC — vintage sports cards, fast + affordable turnaround
